Every now and then, I’ll add a post citing an inspiration… here’s the first: Van Gogh’s Wheatfield With Crows.
To my shame, I only really saw this painting relatively recently – the last couple of years. Of course, I’d seen his more famous works so often, they become part and parcel of the background of your world. You forget how you felt the first time you saw them.
For a reason I cannot explain, this painting speaks to me in a way that very few others do. I could stare at this for hours and not get bored.

I can’t tell you why. I won’t pretend to have the foggiest clue about the genius of his composition or brushstrokes. All I know is that it creates an emotional reaction within me.
As the title suggests, it’s a Wheatfield With Crows. Pretty straightforward, right? Doesn’t really sound very exciting. And if you tried to describe it: long brushstrokes in thick oil, crows which are nothing more than splodgy v shapes and some swirling cloudy things, it doesn’t sound great. I doubt my description would be used for any marketing materials.
It’s incredible to think that at this moment, I am 130+ years removed from the creation of this painting.
Just imagine how many artistic styles that came after, that I’ve consciously and unconciously absorbed, bombarded by some of the most incredible creativity and artwork to be produced.
Not only that, but the internet allows me to see all these artworks in an instant.
And yet, this painting gave me a visceral, emotional reaction like nothing I’ve experienced before.
